Like Paul, Peter also says that the day of the Lord will come like a thief. Peter tells us that during the day of the Lord the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. (2 Peter 3:10) Peter of course is speaking of none other than God’s judgment on this fallen world. Because of God’s coming judgment, in light of this coming destruction, Peter tells us our conduct should be holy and our lives characterized by godliness.
It is good to do periodic, self-examinations. What idols have we let creep into our lives? Where have we grown lazy in our spiritual disciplines? What sin have we played around with and not cut away with the sharp edge of God’s Word?
Walking in holiness is directly related to how much we allow God to overshadow us - as opposed to how much we allow the world to take root. Do we live off of God, supping daily with Him in His Word, letting Him speak deeply into our souls, choosing to walk in obedience, so that others get His full radiance in our lives? Or do we let the world overshadow us, living off of that which is worthless, even filthy, not setting ourselves apart from the world. Others then get the radiance of the world in our lives.
In Peter’s first letter he wrote, “…but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, “YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.” And if you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each man’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay upon earth.” (1 Peter 1:15-17)
2 Peter 3:14 “Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless.
